Presidential Elite pieces take 10 to 21 days to weave. Add shipping on top. If your ceremony is in four weeks, order this week. If it is in eight days, buy a Heritage Classic or a Signature Profile piece from what is ready and be happy with it, because a smock that arrives is better than the perfect one that does not.
Groups take longer. Five matching smocks for groomsmen is five weavers or one weaver working five times as long. Talk to us before you commit to a date.
That is the constraint. Everything below is the enjoyable part.
What the groom wears
The groom is meant to outdress the room, and in a fugu that is done by density of work, not by loudness of color.
Go to the top tier. What separates a groom's smock from a guest's is the strip count, the hand embroidery at the neck and chest, and inlay or gold-thread work through the cloth. From across a hall it reads as depth. Close up, at the photographs your family will keep for forty years, it reads as somebody's hands.
Colors that work for a groom: royal blue, navy, deep green, black with gold, white with gold. White and gold is the most photographed combination at Ghanaian traditional ceremonies for a reason. It holds up under the harsh light of a marquee, which is where most of these photos are taken.
Add the zipligu cap. A groom in a smock without the hat looks unfinished in a way that is hard to name until you see it. Note that we sell smocks only, not caps, so source that in Ghana or ask us and we will point you at a weaver's shop.
Under it: a plain white tee, dark trousers, leather sandals. Not trainers. Not a wristwatch that fights the gold thread.
What the groomsmen wear
The rule is coordinate, do not match.
Matching smocks in an identical colorway looks like a uniform, and it flattens the groom into one of six identical men in the photographs. The better approach is one family, different pieces. Put the groomsmen in the same color ground, at one tier below the groom, and let the pattern vary. Six men in blue where one is Royal Blue, one is Navy, one is Blue and White and one is Blue Patchwork looks intentional and photographs far better than six identical smocks.
If you want them truly matched, order early and order together, and expect the lead time to stretch.
Practical note: groomsmen come in different builds and One Size fits a 36 to 52 inch chest. Anyone outside that gets free custom sizing, but that has to be measured and ordered at the same time as the rest, not the week before.
What guests wear
Wear a smock. It is welcome, and at a traditional ceremony it is close to expected for men.
Two things to avoid. Do not wear white and gold, and do not wear whatever the couple has announced as their colors, which for Ghanaian weddings is usually stated in the invitation. Beyond that, anything goes. A Heritage Classic solid in brown, grey, bronze or charcoal is the safe, correct guest choice. It shows respect for the occasion without competing with the couple.
Dark grounds are also right for the funeral you may be attending in the same season. That is not a morbid observation. It is why a black or dark brown smock is the most-used piece most men own.
Traditional ceremony versus white wedding
Ghanaian couples usually hold two events, and the smock belongs squarely at one of them.
At the traditional marriage, the knocking and the engagement, the smock is the natural dress for the groom and for most of the men present. This is where the ceremonial pieces belong: gold, inlay, embroidery, the hat.
At the white wedding, the church service, most grooms wear a suit. The smock still has a place, usually at the reception, where a good number of grooms change into one for the dancing. If you are buying a single smock for both, buy the ceremonial piece and wear it to the traditional ceremony. It will not sit right under the church's dress code and it should not have to.
Coordinating with kente
Kente and fugu are both Ghanaian and both hand-woven, and they are not from the same place or the same tradition. Kente is Asante and Ewe, silk and rayon, dense and brilliant. Fugu is northern, cotton, open and matte. Put them side by side without thought and they argue.
They work together when one of them is quiet. A bride in full kente beside a groom in a plain deep-ground smock with modest gold accents reads as balanced. A bride in kente beside a groom in the most ornate gold-thread smock in the catalogue reads as two competing pieces of cloth.
If both families want both traditions present, the usual solution is a kente stole or a kente strip over a plain smock. Keep the smock solid in that case.
