Hand-woven Ghana Fugus crafted by master artisans of Northern Ghana. Each piece carries centuries of tradition, reimagined for the modern world.
The Fugu Smock transcends borders, backgrounds, and traditions. From boardrooms in New York to festivals in Accra, our pieces are worn by people who appreciate authentic craftsmanship — no matter where they come from.
Each smock is a bridge between cultures: hand-woven in Northern Ghana, styled for the modern world, and designed to make anyone who wears it feel extraordinary.
Born in the ancient weaving villages of Northern Ghana, the Ghana Fugu (known locally as "Batakari") has been the garment of chiefs, warriors, and storytellers for over 500 years.
We partner directly with over 200 master weavers across Tamale, Yendi, and Bolgatanga — ensuring every smock you wear carries the authentic spirit of Dagbon culture while providing fair wages to the artisans who create them.
Each piece takes 5 to 14 days to hand-weave on traditional narrow-strip looms, then hand-sewn and finished with meticulous attention to detail. No two smocks are ever identical.

All our fugu smocks come in a generous One Size that fits most adult men, thanks to the traditional loose, poncho-style cut. The smock drapes comfortably over the body without clinging. Check our size guide for exact measurements. If you need a custom fit — tighter, longer, or for a different body type — just contact us and our artisans will tailor one for you at no extra charge.
Every Ghana Fugu smock is made from 100% hand-loomed cotton, woven on traditional narrow-strip looms by artisans in Northern Ghana. The strips are typically 3–4 inches wide and are hand-sewn together to create the finished garment. The cotton is breathable, durable, and becomes softer with each wash.

Import duties and taxes are the buyer’s responsibility and vary by country. US customers may benefit from duty-free entry under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA). Hand wash in cold water with a mild detergent. Do not bleach. Lay flat to air dry — avoid tumble drying or wringing, which can distort the weave. If ironing is needed, use a low heat setting. Natural dyes may develop a beautiful patina over time, which is a hallmark of authentic hand-woven fabric.
We accept returns within 14 days of delivery. Items must be unworn, unwashed, and returned with all original tags attached. The buyer is responsible for return shipping costs. Custom-made or personalised smocks are non-returnable. See our full returns policy for details.
Every Ghana Fugu smock comes with a certificate of authenticity and an artisan tag identifying the weaver who crafted your piece. We partner directly with artisan communities in Tamale, Yendi, and Bolgatanga. You can verify authenticity by the visible hand-stitched seams where narrow strips are joined — a hallmark of genuine hand-woven fugu.
A single fugu smock takes between 5 and 14 days to hand-weave, depending on the complexity of the pattern and embroidery. Each piece is unique — no two smocks are ever identical. After weaving, the strips are hand-sewn together and finished with traditional motifs, adding another 1–3 days to the process.
