Gold work is loom work, and loom work is time. The gold in these smocks is not printed, not embroidered on afterwards as a finishing flourish, and not a coating. It is metallic thread carried through the weave, mostly as supplementary-weft inlay, which means the weaver introduces extra threads across the warp to raise a motif or a band while the cloth is being made. Stop, place, weave on. It is slow, it is unforgiving, and a mistake means unpicking. That is why every one of these takes 10 to 21 days, and why the cheapest gold piece we sell is $225.
There is no honest way to make a gold-thread smock quickly. If you find one at $60, the gold is printed on.
Gold also carries weight in the north. Ornate metallic work belongs to chiefs, elders and ceremony, and the density of the work on a smock is legible to anyone who grew up around them.
